Chinmay Sutar Scores 400*: Second Indian to Hit a First-Class Quadruple Century

Chinmay Sutar’s unbeaten 400 for Mizoram against Nagaland on 19 October has placed him alongside Bhausaheb Nimbalkar in a rare Indian first-class batting club. Mizoram declared at 581/9 in the Ranji Trophy Plate match at Sovima.

Latest domestic cricket update

Chinmay Sutar finished unbeaten on 400 for Mizoram against Nagaland on Monday, 19 October 2026, becoming only the second Indian batter to reach a first-class quadruple century. The Ranji Trophy Plate innings came at Nagaland Cricket Stadium in Sovima, with Mizoram declaring at 581/9. 1 2

The milestone puts Sutar alongside Bhausaheb Nimbalkar, whose unbeaten 443 for Maharashtra against Kathiawar in the 1948–49 season remains the tournament’s highest individual score. Sutar moved into second place, ahead of Prithvi Shaw’s 379. He did not break Nimbalkar’s record. 2

Sutar’s 400 came from 517 deliveries

The completed Mizoram innings scorecard lists Sutar on 400 not out from 517 balls, with 46 fours and seven sixes. Mizoram’s declaration came after 154.1 overs. The asterisk beside his score means he remained unbeaten when the innings ended. 3

Those figures explain the scale of the performance without confusing an individual score with the team total: Sutar made 400, while Mizoram finished on 581/9 declared. The declaration closed the innings with one wicket still available, rather than Sutar being dismissed at the landmark. 1 3

He had arrived at the crease early, after the first wicket fell, according to Cricinfo. What followed was an innings spanning repeated changes of batting partner and much of two days’ play, rather than a late cameo in an already settled total. 2

Why Nimbalkar’s record still stands

The important comparison is within first-class cricket. Nimbalkar’s 443 not out is the higher Ranji score; Sutar’s 400 not out makes him the second Indian to reach the four-hundred mark, not the first player worldwide to do so. 2

It is also a multi-day batting record, not a T20 or one-day total. Readers comparing these formats can use Vedik Exchange’s domestic cricket guide for the distinction between first-class state competitions and limited-overs tournaments. The account terminology on that page does not make a Vedik account an official board identity.

A first century in only his second first-class match

Cricinfo reports that the 29-year-old moved from Mumbai to Mizoram before the 2026–27 season and was playing only his second first-class fixture. His season-opening appearance against Manipur had brought scores of 35 and 99, so this was also his first century in the format. 2

That career context makes the innings more than a familiar senior batter adding another large score. Sutar had narrowly missed a hundred in his previous match and then converted his next first-class century into 400. His Mizoram performances should nevertheless be assessed as domestic achievements, not presented as evidence of an announced national selection. 2

For another young batter’s contrasting route through the same competition, our dated report on Uday Saharan’s Punjab century explains a Day 1 rebuilding innings in the Elite section. It is separate from Sutar’s Plate match and should not be read as Punjab’s current live score.

The match was still in progress

At the official BCCI page’s Day 2 stumps checkpoint, Nagaland were 50/1 after 13 overs, replying to Mizoram’s 581/9 declared. The fixture runs from 18 to 21 October. That snapshot confirms the size of the first-innings task, but it is not a final match result. 1

The story here is Sutar’s completed innings and its place in the record book. The remaining match, Nagaland’s response and any later result are separate developments to be checked against the official scorecard.
